Project Overview

Located in the heart of Cardiff’s Cyncoed suburb, Amber Vista combines refurbished structures with additional new floors, creating a modern residential and commercial space. The challenge was to install a facade that seamlessly integrated with the local architectural character while meeting stringent sustainability and efficiency standards. To achieve this, Silver Crescent selected the MechSlip brick cladding system, expertly installed by Next Level Facades.

Product Selection and Key Features

The MechSlip system was chosen for its:

• Sustainability: Retaining the original structure helped preserve embodied carbon, reducing the project’s environmental footprint. The MechSlip system uses 75% less material than traditional masonry, further supporting sustainability goals.

• Design Flexibility: The Marziale brick, known for its light honey tones and textured finish, provided the perfect blend of modern vibrancy and classic appeal. The system allowed for complex detailing, including vertical stretcher bonds, recessed panels, and overhanging soffits, ensuring structural integrity without compromising aesthetics.

• Logistical Advantages: With a reduced cladding zone of just 95mm in certain areas, the lightweight system provided a practical solution for optimising space. Additionally, its BBA certification guaranteed fire and weatherproofing compliance, backed by a 25-year warranty.

Installation

Next Level Facades was responsible for helping install 2,304m² of MechSlip cladding using Ash & Lacy’s Axial aluminium support brackets and rails. As a trusted member of Aquarian’s Installer Network, our expertise ensured the project was completed to the highest standards.

The installation required precise planning and execution:

• Advanced Modelling: Revit software was employed to model bespoke brick pieces and ensure alignment across varying facade depths and orientations.

• Seamless Integration: The modularity of the system allowed for efficient integration of fire barriers, insulation, and recessed elements while maintaining design cohesion.

• Weather-Resistant Approach: The dry installation method eliminated delays typically caused by wet trades, keeping the project on schedule despite unpredictable weather.

Navigating Challenges

The project’s urban location presented logistical challenges, with operational retail units—including Tesco Express and a pharmacy—requiring minimal disruption. Additionally, high footfall and vehicular traffic complicated material deliveries and on-site storage.

To mitigate these challenges, Next Level Facades collaborated with Silver Crescent and Aquarian Cladding Systems to implement a detailed site scheduling system. This live tool allowed for:

• Real-time updates to ensure precise delivery coordination.

• Timely offloading and storage management, minimising disruption.

• Eight carefully planned deliveries that adhered to safety and workflow requirements.
